Trailhead Hike: Trillium Hike, VA

Today we will visit the Linden area, which has one of the highest concentrations of trillium in the country, and indeed of the world. All hikers will begin from the parking area on Freezeland Road adjoining the Upper Ted Lake entrance into the Fred Thompson Wilderness.

$5. Long hike: 12 mi., 2200 ft. elevation gain. Moderate hike: 9 mi., 1600 ft. elevation gain.
All hikers will begin from the parking area on Freezeland Road adjoining the Upper Ted Lake entrance into the Fred Thompson Wilderness. All hikers will continue on the AT, eventually taking an unmarked trail and a fire road to descend to Thompson Lake. From Thompson Lake hikers will take the Verlin Smith Trail to ascend to the AT, go briefly on the AT, and then take the trail to Upper Ted Lake and the parking area. Long hikers will do an additional out-and-back before turning onto the unmarked trail to go past the Whiskey Hollow shelter to a high point that provides views of the valley below.
