Shenandoah’s summer splendor beckons on this Capital Classic in the park’s North District. Babbling mountains streams and deep, cool forest await us as we start hiking at the intersections of Rts. 653 & 612 on the east side of the Blue Ridge and gradually ascend an assortment of trails – Thornton River, Hull School, Fork Mountain, and Piney Ridge Trails – to the Appalachian Trail. There moderate hikers turn south to Elkwallow Wayside on the Skyline Drive. Long hikers reach the Wayside via a loop on the AT and Elkwallow Trails. The reward for both hikes: ice cream is available at the shop at Elkwallow Wayside!
