The Hazel Mountain area of Shenandoah National Park was well-populated before the national park was created and many of its trails were formed from the network of roads and paths created by the resident farmers. Remains of some of the original stone walls are still visible. All hikers start at the Pinnacle Overlook, descending via the Hannah Run and Catlett Mountain Trails to the junction with the Hazel Mountain Trail. Moderate hikers continue along the Hazel Mountain Trail while long hikers loop with the Sams Ridge and Hazel River Trails back to the Hazel Mountain Trail. All hikers complete the hike by taking the White Rocks Trail, Hazel River Trail, and Skyline Drive to the Hazel Mountain Overlook.
