There’s a plethora of hiking and rugged Massanutten Mtn. scenery in the Elizabeth Furnace area of George Washington National Forest, and the dog days of August are an ideal time to experience both.

About the Event
$26. Long hike: 13½ mi., 2700 ft. ascent, 2800 ft. descent. Moderate hike: 9½ mi., 1900 ft. ascent, 2000 ft. descent.
Our hike starts on idyllic Fort Valley Rd., with a climb on the Veach Gap Trail to Veach Gap. There we’ll meet the Massanutten Trail and follow it north for great views before descending on the Sherman Gap and Botts Trails to Elizabeth Furnace. Long hikers add a 4-mile loop on the Mudhole Gap, Sidewinder, Tuscarora, and Bear Wallow Trails, (Sorry, it’s not possible to hike the 4-mile loop only; you must do it after the 9 ½-mile route.)
