About the Event

$26. Basic hike: 8½ mi., minimal elevation change, option for additional distance.

If you’ve never visited the Paw Paw Tunnel, this hike is a must. Built in the 1840s to carry the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal under a mountain to bypass six bends in the Potomac River, the 3,118-ft. tunnel was a 19th Century engineering marvel. We’ll approach it from near Town Creek, Md. with an eastbound jaunt on the canal towpath. After passing the Paw Paw Tunnel Campground, we’ll take the Tunnel Hill Trail over the mountain, rejoin the towpath, reverse direction and go through the tunnel (a flashlight will be handy), ending at the campground. Want more hiking? You can add distance on the towpath.

Leaders: Pat H. (301/908-2637) and Chris Powell
