Mountain laurel, the colorful shrub that turns the high country of Shenandoah into a showplace in early June, should still be blazingly abloom to highlight this Appalachian Trail ramble in the park’s South District.

About the Event
$26 + park fee/pass. Long hike: 12 mi., 3000 ft. ascent, 2700 ft. descent. Moderate hike: 8½ mi., 2000 ft. ascent, 1700 ft. descent.
Long hikers hit the AT where it crosses the Skyline Drive at mile 66.7 and head southbound over aptly named, 3,587 ft. Hightop Mtn. They’ll descend to Smith Roach Gap on the drive, where moderate hikers join their route. Both hikes continue on the AT to the drive’s Ivy Creek Overlook.
