Hike: AT – Gathland/Ed Garvey Shelter/Weverton Cliffs, MD

$5. Long hike: 13 mi., 1500 ft. ascent/ descent. Moderate hike: 7½ mi., 1000 ft. ascent/descent.

From Gathland, notable for its monument to war correspondents and remnants of a mausoleum (that ultimately never was used), all hikers go south along the AT there-and-back. Moderate hikers go up to the Ed Garvey Shelter, while long hikers continue to Weverton Cliffs.  Those feeling especially energetic may go along the spur trail to the overlook; it doesn’t add much distance but it does involve a couple of hundred feet of additional elevation gain.
