We return to the Appalachian Trail today to hike one of its favorite stretches in Shenandoah – connecting two of the park’s resort areas and crossing the park’s highest summit.

$26 + park fee/pass. Long hike: 10½ mi., 2500 ft. ascent, 2400 ft. descent, Medium hike: 8½ mi., 2000 ft. ascent, 1900 ft. descent. Short hike: 6 mi. 1500 ft. ascent, 1600 ft. descent.
Starting at the Big Meadows Picnic Area, we’ll head north on the AT and take a side trip on the Salamander Trail to the summit of 4,050 Hawksbill Peak and a memorable view. Then it’s back to the AT, with short hikers stopping at the Crescent Rock Overlook, medium hikers at Skyland. Long hikers add a side trip to Millers Head.
