Antietam National Battlefield commemorates the site of the bloodiest battle in American history and is known as one of the best-preserved Civil War battlefields, so that visitors will view a landscape that has altered little since 1862, when the battle occurred. All hikers will take the Cornfield Trail and the West Wood Trail to the Visitor Center, which contains numerous exhibits and provides a video orientation. They will then pass through the “Bloody Lane” and proceed along the Three Farms Trail and Union Advance Trail to the Burnside Bridge. Long hikers will take an additional loop at the bridge along the Snavely Farm and Final Attack Trails.
