Although much of the Potomac Heritage Trail winds its way through the suburban portion of the Greater DC Metro area, parts of it seem as remote as the forests in New England, providing many views of the Potomac River where its width is broadest.

$36. Long hike: 11½ mi., 1800 ft. elevation gain. Moderate hike: 8½ mi., 1300 ft. elevation gain.
Long hikers start at Algonkian Regional Park and moderate hikers start at Seneca Regional Park. All hikers head downstream along the Potomac Heritage Trail and continue to Great Falls, with dramatic views of the Falls itself and of the dam just north of the Falls.
